Derek Draper was admitted to hospital at the start of the pandemic in March 2020 and spent over a year there battling the effects of the brutal virus, including a period in an induced coma. Kate Garraway has shared her gratitude that, although they are adjusting to an immensely tough “new normal”, at least her husband will spending Christmas at home this year.
[I’m] grateful he’s here at all which we feared would never happen
“This year, we have got him home – and fingers crossed we can keep him home,” the 54-year-old presenter explained.
Derek is still far from a total recovery however, currently finding it too “exhausting” to travel outside his home.
“Of course, he’s not going to be putting on his Santa costume going out with Darcey for a father-and-daughter Christmas shop or the same with Billy,” she elaborated of his relationship with the couple’s 16-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son.
“None of those things are on the horizon at the moment so it’s adjusting to a new normal but also grateful he’s here at all which we didn’t have at all last year and feared would never happen.”
However, the biggest challenge will be uniting their two extended families together.
“The dream would be to get Derek to Chorley,” she admitted to Woman’s Own magazine.
“At the moment, moving him is a big problem: it’s exhausting for him.
“If not, maybe the Drapers could come to us for a big gathering, Covid permitting.”
However, Good Morning Britain star Kate has also agonised over the reality that currently family members aren’t keen to be hosted by her on Christmas Day anyway, after her oven broke down.
“I’m not sure anyone wants to come to me,” she joked, before adding that she would definitely be seeing the Garraways.
It has been a stressful time for Kate, who has become more like a carer to her husband than a partner – and last month she broke down herself, in a very public way.
Kate appeared on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories – the last episode that he would ever present due to his dramatic departure from the channel over his refusal to apologise for comments about Meghan Markle.

Struggling to stop the tears, she explained the heart-breaking “loneliness” of having her husband physically present, but clearly unwell, confused and disorientated.
“There are lots of moments of joy in [his] recognition, moments with the children where he definitely knows what they’re saying to him and remembers things.
“I want him there and I want him back, but some days his presence reminds me of the absence, so you can feel very lonely.
“I feel like I just want to talk to Derek. Even though I believe he’s there, he can’t be there in that same way.
“I love him more than ever.”
She added that she had no idea what the future might hold.
Disappointingly, despite being discharged from hospital in April this year, Derek has still not made enough progress to live the life he did before.
As he continues to recover, Kate will have her fingers crossed for a less stressful Christmas in 2022.
