The new Eternals trailer is out and with it, new potential leaks on the plot, characters, and the next phase of the MCU. A new video from the Heavy Spoilers YouTube channel broke down each shot and explained possible leaks as to what viewers could expect from the new Marvel adaptation.
It’s unclear how much the Eternals’ origins differ from the comics, but it’s possible the movie’s plot will focus on a war between the Eternals and the Deviants, both created by the even more powerful Celestials. The Deviants were the first attempt at guarding intelligent lifeforms including humans, but they became too bloodthirsty to control. Then, the Eternals were created to stop The Deviants.
The Eternals’ powers come from cosmic energy, which is why their hands are gold. It also harkens back to Captain Marvel, who also has cosmic energy she pulls from. The colors of magic are important in the cinematic universe, since it’s also seen in WandaVision in fights between Agatha and Wanda. Red is chaos magic, purple is dark magic, and orange/gold is standard magic.
At the start of the trailer, we’re some time in the distant past, possibly Mesopotamia or another early civilization. A father and son go fishing, but are then attacked by the Deviants, who emerge from the clouds in a floating triangular ship. The Eternals defeat their adversaries, then go on to help humanity develop technology necessary to advance. In one shot, Thena puts her hand in the dirt to give humans flowing water so plants can grow.
In the present day, the Eternals thought they killed the Deviants, but the evil group returns, now with the ability to heal. After their first successful battle, the Eternals went their separate ways, some together and some alone.
Ajak is seen out in the desert by herself. Sersi is in the UK working as a teacher, which is how she meets Dane Whitman (who may or may not become The Black Knight in the course of the film). Sersi appeared to be with Ikaris at the start of the film, but the leaks say they then grow apart and Sersi begins to date Dane. Thena and Gilgamesh are in Australia, and have an unrequited love storyline. Phastos is also said to be the first gay MCU superhero, and will be living with his husband and their child.
Makkari also makes an appearance in a heavily decorated room which could be the Eternals’ abandoned ship. In her room, there is an ankh, medieval knight’s armor, and other historical artifacts to show how long the guardians have been around.
Kumail Nanjiani’s Kingo is also on his own, now a famous Bollywood film star. He has a film crew documenting every aspect of his life, which is why there’s a shot of a camera crew standing next to the group in the trailer.
Fan have asked why the Eternals didn’t interfere with the world-altering events of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. From what the trailer shows, the Eternals are onlookers, who gave humanity the tools to survive but are hands-off when it comes to using them. Now that humanity is no longer in its early stages, they’ve largely backed off.
Druig is the film’s main antagonist and a Deviant who can control minds. The Eternals appear to confront him in a village he’s taken over. Druig has lost faith in humanity’s ability to rule itself and wants to use his powers to stop wars. He’s testing out his powers on the locals before attempting to try it out on a grand scale, which is why there’s a shot of the Eternals standing together with creepy villagers all dressed the same behind them.
The Eternals also appear directly concerned with post-Endgame events. There are a few references to both Iron Man and Captain America being gone, and the Eternals discuss who would be a good replacement as leader of the Avengers. They specifically refer to Steve Rogers as Captain Rogers and not Captain America, which is possibly an acknowledgement that Sam Wilson is the new Captain America.
