The 54-year-old said he would only give the presenter, 60, one critique at a time behind the scenes of the BBC show.

The father-of-two claimed he otherwise might see her well up, and he certainly did not want to upset his partner and now pal.

Anton revealed all in podcast, Life and Soul by Emma Forbes, branding Ruth “hilarious”.

The host, 55, had initially stated: “I know when you were working with Ruth, I love Eamonn [Holmes] and Ruth, and Ruth was like, ‘Anton was like the sweetest person ever’.

“You are lovely to people…” she continued, as she reflected on what it’d be like if she worked with the pro.

“This is exactly Ruthie,” Anton had replied. “I love Ruth – she’s hilarious.”

He went on to discuss what taking part in Strictly was really like, with long hours in rehersals ahead of the live Saturday shows.

He commented: “You get tired and emotional about everything. It’s hard, hour after hour, it not going in, ‘Still can’t do it’. ‘Try it again’.”

Continuing to quote what he’d say to his celebrity parnters, Anton told Emma: “‘Not bad, let’s try it again’, ‘OK’. ‘Similar, one more time. Here we go’.

“‘Don’t do your own stuff, just try and do the stuff I showed you’.”

He then detailed how he would explain the issues to Ruth, without going too far.

The star said: “If we had a go at something and I’d say, ‘Not great, your arms weren’t very good’.

“I’d see the old tears start to well up. Then I’d go, ‘But your feet were amazing,’ and they’d [the tears] die down.”

Anton added: “If I’d go to her, ‘The arms didn’t work and the feet were awful’ I’d have the tears. I couldn’t give her two [criticisms], only one.

“‘Lets try it again or would you like some tea?'”

He and Ruth have become firm friends thanks to Strictly, despite them getting the boot in seventh place.

The series was eventually won by Holby City actor Joe McFadden and Katya Jones.

Gemma Atkinson and Aljaž Škorjanec, Debbie McGee and Giovanni Pernice as well as Alexandra Burke and Gorka Márquez also appeared in the final.

Ruth endured more than her fair share of difficult moments on Strictly before being eliminated.

During one particular week, the mother-of-one got tearful after the judges savaged her performance to her late dad’s favourite song, Bobby Darin’s Mack The Knife.
