Alex Jones has been left “gutted” as she revealed she has been forced to temporarily step away from her hosting role on The One Show.

The One Show host Alex, 43, has been forced to self-isolate for two weeks after she met a friend for an outside walk, who subsequently tested positive for coronavirus.

Alex, who recently opened up n arguments with husband Charlie Thompson, was replaced by Gethin Jones as the news was revealed on the BBC One show on Friday 30 October.

As she appeared via video link on the show, Alex explained what had happened.

She told viewers: “I am absolutely gutted that I am not there but what's happened is a friend of mine, somebody outside work who I saw a few days ago, has tested positive for coronavirus.

“So we have done the right thing as a family and we are just isolating. Now I have taken a test and thankfully it is negative – by the way my friend is fine as well – but we are staying, we are following guidelines.

“I will probably be back at work the week after next.”

Alex, who came under fire for forgetting social distancing rules recently, also revealed the isolation period does have its positive sides as she is staying at home with husband Charlie and their children Edward and Kit.

She explained: “There are definitely upsides to it.

“Charlie is back with the children, you can probably hear them just above me now, and I will go and read them some stories in a sec, which is lovely.

“The thing is, it is what it is. We are all in the same boat, so that's it really. But I miss you all. I miss the crew as well.”

Alex dedicated the end of the episode of the hit BBC One show to Charlie Mott, who died suddenly the weekend before.

Charlie – whose cause of death is yet to be revealed – was a researcher for the chat show, and had been working on The One Show for two years.

Joined by guest co-host Michael Ball, Alex choked up as she announced the news of her teammate's passing.

She said: “Before we go, we just wanted to pay tribute to one of our colleagues, Charlie Mott, who sadly died at the weekend.

“Everybody on the team is absolutely devastated. He was hugely talented and such good company, we miss him so much.

“Our thoughts are with his family, and we are sending lots of love from all of us here. Goodnight.”
