A VERY BRITISH PICNIC ( Hoxton Mini Press £17.95, 128pp). The book highlights how much the British love a picnic

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Brits first came up with the modern idea of a picnic, given how much we love – or endure – them, come rain, shine or blizzard. It was however the French, with the word ‘pique-nique’, most likely stemming from the verb piquer — to pick. Regardless of where the notion came from, this charming little book highlights how much the British love plonking themselves down just about anywhere (whether that’s next to a cliff, a motorway, or in a field of bewildered cows) whatever the weather, to marvel at the joy that comes from eating outdoors.
