BARBARA HEPWORTH: ART & LIFE by Eleanor Clayton (Thames & Hudson £25)
‘One can easily expire bothering about moths & cleanliness & cabbages,’ wrote Barbara Hepworth.
The sculptor constantly juggled domestic life with her work, as shown by this wonderful illustrated biography, written to coincide with a major retrospective at The Hepworth Wakefield gallery.
With triplets, this was no mean feat but, as the museum curator Eleanor Clayton argues, Hepworth’s family life was also a great source of inspiration. Pictured here with Curved Form (Trevalgan), she died in 1975, but her sculptures still stand — far more enduring than cleanliness or cabbages.
