This year saw Game of Thrones end, but the A Song of Ice and Fire books the TV show is based on still has two novels to go in The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. Author George RR Martin last published a book in the series in 2011 when Game of Thrones’ first season aired. And come season 6 in 2016 and the show’s narrative had surpassed where the author was up to in the books. While he’s still plugging away at penultimate novel The Winds of Winter, the 70-year-old has now seemingly revealed he almost tried to finish the book so it could be published in time for Christmas 2015.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly on the pressure of not letting Game of Thrones overtake his books, Martin and his editors originally had a plan to avoid this.
The author said: “I felt a tremendous amount of pressure for years now.
“The most pressure I felt was a few years ago when I was desperately trying to stay ahead of the show.
“There was a point when the show was coming out in April and my editors said if I could finish the book by December they’d rush it out.
“And the pressure I felt that fall was the greatest pressure I’ve ever felt and then at a certain point it became apparent I’m not going to finish it by then.”
‘IT WAS A BLOW WHEN GAME OF THRONES OVERTOOK MY BOOKS’ SAYS GEORGE RR MARTIN
Considering that Game of Thrones season 6, the series that overtook the books, aired in April 2016, it can be deduced that Martin and his editors planned to have The Winds of Winter release in December 2015, a good four months ahead of the HBO show.
By the sounds of it, the autumn of 2015 was the last time he thought he could keep up with the show before realising it wasn’t going to happen.
Even so, why has the book now not released almost four years later?
Well, according to Martin he doesn’t want to rush, as he wants the last two books to be as good as possible even if fans know how it all ends now.
The author added: “I don’t only want to finish it, I want to make it as good as I possibly can.
“Since then there’s been pressure but not like there was at that point.
“There’s no longer a race. The show is over. I’m writing the book. It will be done when it’s done.”
Martin has set himself a personal deadline of Summer 2020 to publish The Winds of Winter.
